The Municipality of Ushuaia participated in the official presentation of the third edition of the FIFUSA Intercontinental Cup of Futsal Clubs, which will take place in the Fuegian capital from October 25 to 30, featuring 12 teams from three continents, including the local representative, Club Casa Magallanes.
The event was held during a press conference at the Hotel Mónaco, led by the Vice President of the International Federation of Futsal (FIFUSA), Pedro Bonettini; the acting President of the Argentine Futsal Confederation (CAFS), Eduardo Pellegrini; the President of the Ushuaia Futsal Federation (FeUFUTSAL), Irma Figueroa; and the coach of Magallanes, Alejandro Velázquez.
Representing the Municipality were Tourism Secretary Viviana Manfredotti and President of the Municipal Sports Institute (IMD), Liliana Gavilán, along with provincial authorities.
Manfredotti emphasized: "Beyond the sporting significance of hosting such an important event, it is also very significant for tourism, as many people will accompany each delegation."
“Visitors during these days will not only enjoy the matches but also explore the city and take advantage of all available tourist services. This event will continue positioning us as a top destination for sports tourism," she added.
The Tourism Secretary further noted that the Intercontinental Cup “will serve as a tool to promote Ushuaia as a destination, which is invaluable, as the city will be in the spotlight on social media throughout the week."
Gavilán highlighted: "This will be a historic event, framed within the activities celebrating the 140th anniversary of the city, with the Cochocho Vargas micro-stadium once again hosting a top-level competition."
"By decision of Mayor Walter Vuoto, as a municipal government, we have been supporting clubs, associations, and federations with public policies, and the Intercontinental Cup is a prime example of that," she stressed.
Pellegrini remarked: "The Municipality’s support is essential to make this Intercontinental Cup happen. Without government backing, hosting such competitions is extremely challenging due to the costs involved, as we are talking about 12 clubs from three continents."
He added: "Ushuaia deserves to host this tournament, and our next goal is to bring a national tournament back to this city."
Bonettini recalled: "During the second Intercontinental Cup, held last year in Brazil, we considered the possibility of bringing the tournament to Argentina. We immediately started working, and now we are just days away from the start." He added, "This would not be possible without the support of the municipal and provincial governments."
"This will be a tournament of excellence, featuring a high technical level, and it will also showcase Ushuaia to the world through media and FIFUSA’s website," he emphasized, noting that "beyond sports, Ushuaia will be seen globally, as sports, culture, and tourism go hand in hand."
Irma Figueroa, head of FeUFUTSAL, expressed her excitement: "We are very pleased with this event, which is happening thanks to the support of the Municipality of Ushuaia and the provincial government. The people of Ushuaia deserve this event, given all the hard work that has been done, and we hope the entire city and province enjoy the tournament."
Finally, Alejandro Velázquez remarked: "When we told club delegates last year that the Intercontinental Cup had made a big impact at the 'end of the world,' they said they would love to participate because they know the passion futsal sparks in Ushuaia." He concluded: "It was a challenge for the city to experience this, and now we are just days away from making it happen."
