On Sunday, the third and final regular matchday of the Intercontinental Futsal Cup took place, which in its third edition is being held in the Fuegian capital.
The Tierra del Fuego teams tied again, both with 3-3 scores. O'Higgins drew against Marguerittois, while Magallanes couldn’t overcome Guerreros Pijaos.
With these results, the eight teams advancing to the next stage have been determined. Bernardino was just seconds away from qualifying, while "Maga" secured 4th place and will face Flamengo from Comodoro Rivadavia this Monday. Here's the summary from LBD.
The first two matches served as farewells for the Chilean teams, who had no chance of advancing after suffering defeats in their first two games.
The opening game saw Deportivo Amistad from Bolivia defeating PQ from Punta Arenas with a solid 5-1 victory. The Bolivian side finished in 6th place and will face Colorado from Brazil on Monday.
The young Puerto Williams squad played their last game against Australia’s United, suffering a 6-1 defeat. The Australian franchise secured second place and will meet the seventh-placed Uruguaiana from Brazil.
Later in the afternoon, the Mendocino champion, Jockey Club, completed the group stage undefeated with three wins to their name.
Their final victory came against the Brazilian team Uruguaiana, with a 4-2 score. The team from Cuyo secured the top seed and will face the eighth-ranked Colombian Guerreros at the beginning of the week.
Brazil’s Colorado overcame Flamengo from Comodoro in one of the most exciting matches of Sunday’s action.
The Brazilian champion narrowly defeated the Chubut team 3-1, claiming third place and leaving the “Oil City” squad in fifth. Flamengo will now face the local team in Monday’s prime-time match.
O'Higgins performed remarkably from start to finish. It's worth mentioning that the organizers invited the Río Grande team at the last minute to replace the Colombian team from Tuluá.
This time, their opponents were the French side Marguerittois, a team that plays better than it looks. Once again, Damián Barria's team started a goal down, and the deficit increased to two, making their comeback even more heroic.
They temporarily turned the score around to 3-2, with goals from González, Mansilla, and Godoy. However, Merciau’s goal and Ouafi’s brace, including the final goal with less than 40 seconds left, tied the match.
The 3-3 draw, however, would not be enough for either team by the end of the day.
The home team, Casa Magallanes, faced the desperate Colombian side Guerreros del Pijaos.
Ballesteros opened the scoring for the Colombians, with Matías Carrizo equalizing for the Fuegians. In the second half, Bernal and Ballesteros again extended the lead for the Colombians, while Nicoliello from the penalty spot and "Maury" Martínez leveled the score for the locals.
It was the second consecutive draw for "Maga," who tried but couldn’t find the winning formula, struggling against the man of the match, Colombian goalkeeper Félix García.
A win and two consecutive draws secured Magallanes second place in their group, behind United.
In the overall standings, they finished fourth and will face the fifth-ranked Flamengo from Comodoro.
From now on, there will be no room for error. Those who emerge victorious will move on to the semifinals. Ladies and gentlemen, place your bets!
